The threat of an avian flu pandemic.
The global threat of avian flu is worse today than it was when I wrote my first article on the subject in May 2005 entitled "Is bird flu pandemic Become" from then, it has spread to many
other countries, but, fortunately, at this stage, it did not, yet mutated to a strain that can transfer from human to human.
It is so easy for the virus to mutate, it can happen as simply as a person catching bird flu in poultry and birds, where that person has already been one of the most common strains of flu.
This could allow the avian flu then cause a pandemic of the deadly disease worldwide.
History of bird flu and its spread.
He started the first time in South Korea in a chicken farm in 2003, a few months later, it was detected in Vietnam and an outbreak was found in chickens in Indonesia, Thailand confirms the death of a six year old boy, was the first known death from bird flu.
China also has problems and Malaysia has found the virus in chickens, near the Thailand border.
This year, 2005, bird flu has been found in ducks in the Philippines, Japan was an outbreak in chickens, it was also found in Russia.
In October 2005, he was discovered in Turkey and Romania, and you can see that is spreading throughout the world, slowly but surely.
The latest is that it has now been discovered in Greece.
It spreads at this stage by birds, mostly migratory birds flying north or south of the Asian region, where they can take to Russia and Europe, or in the other direction, south Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific region.
The European Union has warned that there should not be any panic, but he said the 25 nations that make up the Union to start stockpiling antiviral drug supplies. It was confirmed in almost all cases, the virus strain is the highly virulent and lethal H5N1.
In London, it was confirmed that Britain is in danger and they suggested that all persons who may be vulnerable, should consider having injections of normal flu.
The US Senate, September 29, 2005, voted to provide almost US4 billion to buy a stock of two antiviral drugs.
Future prospects
Professor Ian Frazer from Brisbane, Australia, who with his research team, after many years of heartache, trials and tribulations, announced that they have now developed a vaccine to prevent cervical cancer this vaccine should be available in 2006, is a world breakthrough and a historic discovery, it is now planning to turn his talents to the H5N1 virus, he and several of his colleagues are convinced that it is only a matter of time before the virus will start attacking humans and cause a pandemic.
It has been estimated that the number of deaths in the world, if this pandemic should start, could be as high as 40 million people.
Currently, humans get the virus from birds that have the infection, through their saliva or faeces, which when dry can be inhaled by humans.
Authorities say emphatically that it can not be transmitted by eating poultry.
What can you do It is recommended by a number of authorities that you should consider having the vaccine of the normal human flu.
There are two drugs available that can help, but they are rare, they are also quite expensive, Tamiflu and Relenza, very recent reports even suggest that they might not be good enough to help if the situation becomes a pandemic because they have not been tested yet. We can only hope that they are more effective than the predictions.
Take all the sensible normal precautions. There are many of you out there who are fans of birds, including myself, but remember that birds can carry the virus in their gut without any ill effects for themselves, yes, no not get up too close and personal with birds, never mind how much you love them.
Your immune system is your natural defense against all diseases and illnesses. Try to ensure that you immune system operates as efficiently as possible.
Make sure that you eat and drink is natural and nutritious as you can.
