Are Commonly called SAM-e, this chemical is in every cell in the body and is responsible for creating many different chemicals - S-adenosyl-L-methionine. SAM-e often gets out later in life, the depletion leading to a number of problems, including joint diseases.
Vitamin B - There are plenty of B vitamins and all are essential for the proper functioning of the body. Vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid (B9) have all been linked to various depressive symptoms. Especially among those, vitamin B12deficiency symptoms often manifest as clinical depression, lack of mental clarity, anxiety and sleep disorders.
St. John's Wort - Perhaps the best known of all natural supplements for depression, St. John's wort is also probably the most versatile supplement. This plant is used to relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety relief, help a person sleep longer and more deeply and even relieve muscle pain from fibromyalgia.
Light Therapy - The sun is largely responsible for our overall well-being. You wonder why through a patch of sunlight just makes you feel better?
Sunlight is necessary for the synthesis of essential nutrients in the body, as well as for activation of the neurotransmitter serotonin.
Serotonin is one of the four chemicals in the brain required for the transmission of nerve impulses to their receptors; an imbalance of these chemicals will result in mood changes, and prolonged case is called clinical depression.
If the sun is not available in sufficient quantities, such as during cold months or in the North where there is little or no sun for part of the year, light boxes such as those used to treat certain skin diseases work also.
Omega 3 - These fatty acids are essential for the proper functioning of the brain and have been linked to reducing the symptoms of depression.
For depression, a supplement of EPA and DHA is highly recommended. The fish are known as the best source for Omega 3 so that a diet rich in seafood can help get the necessary omega-3, but most saltwater fish also have mercury levels in those which can be harmful over time. The most convenient and cost effective solution, mercury is a fish oil supplement, which can be taken as a gel-cap, but may need to be refrigerated to prevent the oil from going rancid. Make sure you select a brand of high quality fish oil that many cheaper brands are sold on shelves with oil that is already rancid; with a good brand there should be very little, if any, an aftertaste of fish.
Remember, depression is a disease and should always be treated as such. Before beginning any supplementation regimen, be sure to discuss your plans with your doctor and let him know all the medications you are taking as some can interact badly with supplements.
