Originally, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) food pyramid in 1992 divided the three food groups into six new
groups. These groups are the carbohydrates group was kept as is, the group of vegetables that has been divided into fruits and vegetables and finally the group of proteins which again was divided into meats, beans, eggs and the nuts, milk yogurt and cheese and fats, oils and sweets. This version of the food pyramid has been known as the food guide pyramid.
In 2004, the USDA filled in nutritional details that were missing from the 1992 food pyramid The food pyramid in 1992 suggested that a certain amount of servings per food group per day. 2004 food pyramid was designed to be a more individualized nutritional guide.
At the same time, the USDA was not the only organization to conduct research on nutrition. The Harvard School of Public Health designed the pyramid of healthy eating as a result of a scientific study and research. This food pyramid was significantly better than the food guide pyramid 2004 healthy food pyramid actually recommended a daily intake of each food group. The age, sex and lifestyle of a particular individual amount of each contribution.
Meanwhile, controversy arose between the food pyramid of Harvard and the USDA.
Supporters and sympathizers of the Harvard model claimed that the USDA pyramid was flawed. The argument has to do with the fact that it was the USDA, not the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which created the food pyramid. Ergo, the food pyramid from the USDA was prone to the influence of the food industry lobbyists. Regarding the Harvard model was concerned, it was created only from the scientific study and research. This, they say, made the Harvard model tailored for American nutrition.
In addition to the above controversy, Harvard scientists disagree with the guide 2004 USDA food pyramid because it did not separate whole grain wheat cereal. The USDA food pyramid also did not differentiate between saturated and unsaturated fats. In addition, the USDA food pyramid failed to be more emphatic when it came to discuss weight control and exercise.
In January 2005, the USDA with the HHS released the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. April 19 of the same year, MyPyramid was released by the USDA. Ironically, this version of the food pyramid emphasized activity and moderation. Harvard criticized the 2004 food pyramid for lacking these qualities. The hand history can be seen in the evolution of the food pyramid.
Basically, MyPyramid is a food pyramid that contains guidelines on activity, moderation and correct information for mixing food groups in the diet of an individual. Since the information is very adapted to the nutritional needs of an individual,.
This food pyramid contains eight divisions. There is now a clear division between whole grains and wheat grains. It is emphasized that half of grain intake consists of whole grains. Orange vegetables, dark green vegetables, dried beans, peas and makeup of the division of vegetables. A variety of fruit are highlighted as opposed to fruit juice.
Vegetable oils, nuts and fish are highly recommended. Milk division includes other dairy products.
Low fat and lean meats and fish, beans, peas, nuts and seeds are grouped in the sub-division of the protein. People are encouraged to perform physical exercises 30 minutes a day. Calories, candy, alcohol and other foods are classified as discretionary.
Again, the government has developed critical (as it usually does) for this food pyramid. If a person has to use a website to access their personalized dietary information, what happens to those people who do not have Internet access? Secondly, there are no more tags to define the colors of the pyramid. Although it is explained that the colors denote the food groups, you can not always remember the names.
Third, this food pyramid was to be modeled on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. It seems there is not much relation between this 80-page document and MyPyramid. These are some of the criticisms that MyPyramid has incurred. Conversely, proponents claim that it is easy to understand once you get used to it and the site provides more than enough information. Go figure.
